Chateau Haut Batailley 2004
Truly a Pauillac with St Julien personality, this Classed Growth is run by the talented Xavier Borie of Grand Puy Lacoste with consultant Professor Denis Dubourdieu, who produces very wines of classic Cabernet Sauvignon character here. 2004 has certain rigidity and leanness that may not charm all tasters, but its round fruit and easy tannins that provide a classic nose with lots of mints, blackberry and cedar with coffee and spice notes on the powerful finish. Restrained with a meaty finish as some may say, it may have passed its best years but is still a rare find.
Scores are consistent, such as JS89, WS88, JL89 and JQM88.
JR commented positively, 'Wild blackcurrant flavours on the nose. Not subtle, very raw acidity but fine tannins from Xavier Borie. Honest and rude with health. Not the most concentrated wine, sweet rather than savoury, but round and without aggressive tannins. Well made. A sort of pastiche Pauillac. Drink 2012-20.'.
